When to visit the Maldives, month by month

Dry season vs green season, where the water's clearest, and how to time your trip for the best value without missing the magic.

When to visit the Maldives, month by month

The Maldives has two faces. From November to April, the dry northeast monsoon brings glassy water, blue skies and the postcard you’ve been picturing. From May to October, the wetter season trades a little sunshine for lush light, fewer crowds and noticeably softer prices.

Peak season: November – April

This is prime time — calm seas, superb visibility for diving and snorkelling, and reliably dry days. It’s also when resorts fill first and rates climb, so book overwater villas two to three months ahead, especially around Christmas and New Year.

If you want the water at its clearest and your photos at their bluest, aim for February or March.

Green season: May – October

Don’t write it off. Rain usually comes in short, warm bursts rather than all-day downpours, and between them the islands look their greenest. This is the value window — the same villa can cost a third less, and you’ll often have the house reef to yourself.

So when should you go?

For honeymooners chasing the classic look, target the shoulder months of November or April — great weather without the absolute peak pricing. For divers, the central atolls shine from August to November when manta and whale-shark sightings pick up. For value, June and July are hard to beat.
