Schengen visa: a stress-free checklist

Everything you need, in the order you need it — so your Europe application sails through the first time.

Schengen visa: a stress-free checklist

Most Schengen refusals aren’t about eligibility — they’re about paperwork that’s incomplete or out of order. Get the file right and the rest is routine.

Before you apply

Book your appointment early; slots in peak season vanish weeks ahead. Confirm which country’s consulate you apply to — it’s your main destination, or the first point of entry if the stay is split evenly.

The core documents

  • A passport valid for at least three months beyond your return, with two blank pages
  • The completed application form and two recent photos to spec
  • Confirmed round-trip flights and hotel bookings for the whole stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical cover
  • Bank statements for the last three to six months
  • Proof of employment or business, and leave approval if salaried

Never book non-refundable flights before your visa is approved. Reservations are enough for the application.

The little things that trip people up

Cover letters should state your itinerary clearly and plainly. Statements should show a healthy, non-suspicious balance — no large unexplained deposits days before applying. And sign every page that asks for it.
